How we work
If you join our team in Australia or New Zealand in a role that’s traditionally performed in an office, you have the autonomy to choose where you work from – Office, Hybrid or Anywhere. We believe in creating a culture where our people can do their best work – irrespective of their physical location. Some of us do our best work in an office setting, and some of us work best from somewhere else. Whatever you choose, we want to support you. Periodically we bring the whole team together for planned collaboration, communication, and connection events.
A summary of our three working options is below and we encourage you to ask us any questions you may have during your recruitment process.

-
You come into a carsales office 3 or more days per week.
-
You have a dedicated desk for your laptop, monitor and whatever personal items you need to make your space personal to you (we love plants and family photos!)
-
Because you spend most of your working week in the office you don’t have a carsales home setup – however if you do plan to work from home from time to time, you’ll need to make sure that your workspace is still conducive to delivering your best work.

-
You come into a carsales office 1-2 days per week.
-
When you come into the office you’ll need to book-in to be allocated a hot desk, subject to availability.
-
If you need furniture or equipment, we will help you set up your home office space.

-
You spend the majority of your working time at home and rarely, if ever, work from our offices (i.e. you don’t come in on a regular, weekly basis).
-
We’ll make sure that your full-time home office setup is safe and sets you up for success.
-
Your anywhere location does need to be in the country in which you are employed.
Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging

We celebrate and respect all the diverse qualities of our team – whether that be their age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, ethnicity, religious beliefs, disability, diversity of thought, or knowledge and skillset. After all, it’s these diverse characteristics that not only give us a wide range of perspectives and innovative ideas, but also accurately represent our diverse customer base – which helps to propel us forward to achieve our purpose. Put simply, we wouldn’t be able to achieve great things around the world if we were all the same.
We want everyone to feel like they belong at carsales. You’re valued. You’re respected. And everyone has equal access to opportunities, no matter who you are what team you work with.
A commitment to gender equality
We’ve been recognised as a Workforce Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) Employer of Choice every year since 2016. Our CEO, Cam, is always leading our efforts in this space and is a WGEA Pay Equity Ambassador as well as a board member of Inclusive Australia.
Through our Women In Tech program we proactively create opportunities for our female team members to share their knowledge with younger generations and spend time with the community through events external partnerships. We also focus on upskilling the group through lunch and learn sessions, mentoring and soft skill and leadership development training.

We know that there isn’t an easy fix to get more females interested in a career in tech, so we’re passionate about creating a pipeline of students with coding skills to create sustainable change in this space for future generations. We partner with organisations such as CS in Schools, Monash University’s IT Faculty and Go Girl, Go for IT – and we make sure our people get involved in these partnerships too!
We also sponsor female students to undertake a degree in Computer Science and Information Technology at Swinburne University through our carsales Foundation Women in IT scholarship.
We’re advocates for ending violence against women and have several support mechanisms in place for anyone who finds themselves in a family or domestic violence situation – including paid domestic violence leave.
Backing our LGBTIQA+ teammates
We’re a member of the Welcome Here Project which is one way we let everyone know that we celebrate LGBTIQA+ diversity – and not only do we welcome it, but we encourage it!
We also love to celebrate days such as International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia with inspiring guest speakers who can educate and bring awareness to some of the challenges that the LGBTIQA+ community experiences.
And, very importantly, we offer up to six weeks paid gender transition leave. This leave is available to anyone who is affirming, has affirmed or seeking to affirm their gender and may be used for surgery, medical appointments, counselling or other related purposes.

Supporting parents and families

We know that bringing a new child into your family is an exciting and challenging time. To help ensure all new parents have the flexibility and time they need with their new family member, we offer 18 weeks primary caregivers leave and four weeks of secondary caregivers leave.
Our primary caregivers also have access to five days of ‘Leave up Your Sleeve’ upon return to work – to help our team members out when they need some extra paid days off to adjust to balancing work and home commitments.
We also offer a range of other flexible working arrangements, as we know there are times when not only young family members need your care and assistance. We recognise that people are living longer and the responsibility to assist older family members is becoming more common, and that you may be the carer or become the carer of someone with a disability. We will help to support you through whatever your family situation may be to ensure you can get that work/life balance right for you.
Hackathons
We’re passionate about hackathons because they bring our people together to collaborate with people outside of their immediate teams to invent, innovate, experiment with new ideas and learn. An added benefit is that over half the ideas and concepts developed during hackathons end up contributing to product innovation for our customers!
Hackathons are global, company-wide events which give everyone the opportunity to step away from their day-to-day role and spend time working on new, exciting ideas, and investing in what they’re passionate about. Each Hackathon is themed, with a general focus on how we can use creativity, technology and our in-house innovators to address the changing scope of the landscapes in which we operate.

It begins with a pitch session where an employee will “sell” their idea to their colleagues in the hope that together, they can get the concept up and running. After a few days of working furiously to create a prototype, the Hackathon culminates in a Marketplace session where teams present the product or service to the business.
All our hackathons involve hundreds of our proud digital disrupters from around the globe. And the best bit? You don’t need to be techy to get involved – we love having people from outside of our Tech, Product, Information and Design teams getting involved and pushing themselves out of their comfort zones.
Celebrating great work
We love any excuse to come together and celebrate – and we have a lot of reasons to do so! Every quarter, we take the time to recognise our incredible team members.
The #wearecarsales Awards (affectionately abbreviated to The W.A.C.As ) are designed to recognise anyone who is living our carsales behaviours and demonstrating how these can be bought to life. We love these awards because they are peer nominated, with the winners announced at our fortnightly carsales Catch Ups which are hosted by our Executive Leadership Team. Plus, you get bragging rights for an entire quarter!
But we also know that it’s sometimes those small moments of recognition that can make the world of difference – which is why we have a #shout channel on Slack, so you can call out team members for everything and anything that they’ve done to help you get your job done. From fixing a bug, to helping you deliver a client presentation, to solving a problem that you needed a hand with. Not matter how big or how small, we love to celebrate it all.

Community

Caring for our community is something that we really value. Establishing links and strengthening partnerships with the community and groups that are close to the hearts of our people has always been an important part of who we are.
We support our local communities in a number of ways. In 2023 we have launched our first Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), endorsed by Reconciliation Australia. We allow our people to take time out of their day-to-day and give back through volunteering, and we have a matching giving program through which we support a family of charities who have extensive expertise in areas that really matter to us – including education, equality, prevention of family and domestic abuse, mental health and conservation.
